Food of Jorhat

Cuisine of Jorhat

Although people of Jorhat like having food other than Assamese food but they are always crazy for a traditional Assamese platter. A traditional Assamese platter would comprise of rice, dal, khar, meat, masor tenga, a vegetable dish, aloo pitika, curd and pickle. There are some items in an Assamese platter which is unique to it and is not to be found anywhere else. Rice, dal and vegetable items are made in the same way as are made anywhere else but “khar”, “masor tenga”, “aloo pitika” and “pithas” are some important items made in a unique way in Assam.

Aaloo Pitika
The very dear and tasty “Aloo Pitika” or mashed potatoes is a delicious and mouth watering cuisine of Assam. Potato is first boiled and then mashed with mustard oil, green chillies and raw onions to add to the taste. Jorhat cuisine

Khar
“Khar” is a signature dish of Assam. The khar item is prepared by filtering water through the ashes of a banana tree, which is called kola khar. "Omita khar" is one major Assamese cuisine.

Fish Curry
Other than the normal fish curries, fish is also cooked with green vegetables and herbs like “Narasingha paat” and “bhedailota”. “Masor tenga” is also an indispensable part of a proper Assamese meal. “Masor tenga” is cooked in tomatoes, lemon, “thekera” and “Ou tenga”.

Pithas
In any Assamese household you will get “pithas”. Pithas are made of powdered rice, salt and sugar, itl and coconut. A special kind of rice preparations called the Til pithas or Narikol pithas are made on special occasions like Bihu.
